Working closely with their client, delivery partners and relevant public bodies, BWB Consulting are helping to revive Doncaster as a hub for industry and innovation.
iPort in Doncaster is widely acknowledged to be the UK's most advanced multi-modal logistics park and is the first inland strategic rail freight interchange to have been brought into operation in the past decade.
Not only is it a groundbreaking project in and of itself, but it will also bring significant employment and economic regeneration to a region still blighted by the demise of the coal industry.
When complete, the £400m development will provide 6 million sq ft of distribution warehouse space across 800 acres, creating around 5,000 jobs at businesses such as Amazon and Lidl.
BWB provided primary infrastructure, ground improvement and earthworks design, as well as civils design for the rail terminal. It was also responsible for the drainage, structural and foundation design of the first two warehouse units that were speculatively developed.
The company was also closely involved in highways design, surface water and foul water design, hydraulic modelling, flood risk assessment and supervision of onsite infrastructure works.
Constructing this complex and challenging project to budget and programme demanded a highly collaborative working approach, setting new benchmarks for the UK’s logistics sector in the process.
This allowed the team to win the trust of the regulatory authorities and finalise planning conditions swiftly so as not to cause delays, building confidence for investors and potential leaseholders, and ultimately brining forward much needed employment opportunities for the local community.
