CONSTRUCTION OUTPUT STALLS

Construction output fell 0.4% in volume terms in July, according to latest data from the Office for National Statistics.

The fall comes after the sector reported an increase of 0.5% in June and 1.7% in May – with figures boosted by rises in both new work and repair and maintenance.

July’s decrease in monthly output came from falls in both new work (0.2%) and repair and maintenance (0.7%).

At the sector level, output fell in five out of the nine sectors in July.

The main contributors to the monthly decrease coming from private commercial new work and private housing repair and maintenance, which fell by 2.4% and 1.7%, respectively.

However, better figures in May and June meant construction output is estimated to have grown by 1.2% in the three months to July.

This came from increases in both new work (1.6%), and repair and maintenance (0.8%).
