AECOM and WW+P have been appointed by Transport for London (TfL) to deliver the feasibility study on four new stations as part of the Bakerloo Line Extension project.
Work on the feasibility study will be carried out over the next eight months, with the four new stations – Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate and Lewisham – expected to be operational by 2040 according to TfL, subject to planning and funding approval.
WW+P, which is lead architect for the project, will focus the design aspects of the study.
AECOM will be responsible for all engineering matters, including civil, structural, mechanical and geotechnical engineering, as well as stakeholder engagement and consent.
"We are delighted to be working on this project, connecting southeast London with much-needed transport links to the heart of the city,” says Shadi Shekarrizi, rail director for London and the South-east at AECOM.
“The benefits of this project to these areas will be tremendous and will be felt by communities across Lewisham, Southwark and beyond, potentially providing a £1.5bn boost to the economy each year.
"These new stations will support regeneration across these areas, incentivising new housing development while reducing traffic congestion and overcrowding on local public transportation, and improving air quality.”
Steve Bell, regional director – Europe at WW+P, added: “Our design work will provide tangible transport connectivity to a traditionally under-served part of London.
“This is an historic opportunity to support growth in one of London's most ambitious Opportunity Areas, delivering the new homes and jobs this government continues to highlight the demand for.
“The extension of the Bakerloo Line brings greater connectivity to the area and provides opportunity to enhance it further through new town centres that include community hubs, workspaces and homes.
“With further interventions the road can also become a flagship Healthy Street project for Transport for London, with wide pavements, flexible activity zones, cycleways and electric buses.
"We're pleased that our work could see the progression of one of the most significant next programmes of regeneration in the region centred around transport-oriented development.”
Unlike most Underground lines, the Bakerloo line currently terminates in Zone 1 in central London, with its final stop at Elephant & Castle.
This has been the case since the line opened in 1906, with various proposed extensions over the past century.
The current proposal will see the line run to Lewisham in Southeast London, improving accessibility and reducing journey times to the city centre.
AECOM and WW+P have worked together on a number of station design schemes globally, including the Paddington Elizabeth Line Station and the Crossrail 2 proposal in the UK.
