Former UK secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy Greg Clark MP has added his backing to Green Infrastructure Week, which is taking place from 25-29 April 2022.
Clark, who has signed up as an ambassador for the week, held a ministerial post at BEIS between July 2016 and July 2019 and is widely credited by the green industries as the man who picked up the UK’s Paris Agreement commitments and turned them into what we know today as net zero.
Clark’s work paved the way for the UK becoming, in November 2019, the world’s first major economy to pass laws to end its contribution to climate change, committing the nation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Today, net zero has become the best means to tackle climate change both nationally and globally.
Other governments have of course since followed suit including Japan and Canada, plus all the 27 countries of the EU. Governments with proposed legislation include South Korea and Chile, whilst 37 other governments have a policy document that should lead to proposed legislation, a list which includes the USA, China and Brazil.
Commenting on his support for the week, Greg Clark said: “I am delighted to see initiatives like Green Infrastructure Week championing the need for further investment in green infrastructure. The UK is in a prime position to capitalise on the move towards net zero and ensuring we have the right infrastructure in place will be key to achieving this.”
